World-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma returned to his musical home away from home as he took the stage at Worcester’s historic Mechanics Hall on Friday, January 10. The performance, presented by Music Worcester as the Annual Arthur M. & Martha R. Pappas Foundation Concert, marked another chapter in Ma’s long relationship with this cherished venue, where he recorded his acclaimed “Six Evolutions” Bach suites in 2017.

In this intimate evening titled “Reflections in Words and Music,” Ma weaved together musical performances with personal insights about art’s power to foster human connection. It’s fitting that this 19-time Grammy winner chose Mechanics Hall for this special program, as he has frequently returned to perform and record in the space renowned for its exceptional acoustics.

Ma’s connection to Massachusetts runs deep – he currenlty lives in Cambridge! From his impromptu performance at a Massachusetts vaccination site during the pandemic to his recording sessions at Mechanics Hall, he has consistently demonstrated his belief that music belongs everywhere, bringing people together and offering hope. This performance, supported by Fletcher Tilton, continues that tradition of making world-class cultural experiences accessible to the Worcester community.
